The Stench in the dingy cell of bandra lock-up was getting unbearable. Ammonia smell emanating from the make shift open urinal at the corner of 10x15 sq ft room, accentuated my nauseating feeling. I looked around , the small room was cramped with 7 inmates including myself. Most of them appeared at home in that stink and were at ease. Stark smell of nicotine clubbed with desi hooch wafted through the air as they started speaking amongst themselves . Most of them had dishevelled looks , unkempt and without experience of luxury called bath. I had a cursory glance at myself..except for the Mark & Spencer Label which I wore on the sleeve of my pin stripped shirt , I too, was getting identified as one of the lot, considering the crumpled dirt laden shirt , hair strewn across like a child who have been pampered by someone ruffling his hair , just that, I wasn't pampered - but Man-Handled .I was on verge of Crying. I looked at the Cartier gifted by My Wife..through the moist eyes I could see , the dial indicated 330 AM. Reality suddenly dawn upon me...I had not informed home and my cell was lost in the melee .
"Officer" - I shouted ..calling for the Inspector on duty ,Who appeared completely nonchalant at my pleading. He momentarily raised his head ,giving me hope of an audience...but my flight of fancy nose-dived when he dug into his files .It was just another day in the office for him.
For me too it was just another day in my office , in the morning as I entered my cubicle. Riya Roy, my ultra efficient secretary had kept ET- the financial Daily along with the hot Organic Green Tea at my desk as she saw me entering the office premises. Like Military regimen she worked with clock work precision on my schedule , meetings of the day , fixing my travel itinerary. She could sense the stress on my face as she saw me enter without the customary pleasantry exchange.
